What Are Digital X-Rays?
Digital X-rays are an advanced diagnostic tool used to capture images of your teeth and supporting oral structures. Digital radiography has changed the dental imaging process, making taking X-rays faster, more comfortable and more convenient than ever before. This device captures high-quality images and transmits them immediately to a nearby monitor where our dentist and team can view them and provide you with an accurate diagnosis prior to creating your treatment plan.
When Are Digital X-Rays Used?
Digital X-rays are used to diagnose a number of dental problems, including:
- Tooth decay
- Developmental abnormalities
- Improper tooth root positioning
- Cysts, abscesses and tumors
- Fractures in teeth or existing restorations, such as fillings
- Infection in the tooth nerves
- Bone loss
X-rays are also used in planning and providing a wide range of treatments, including oral surgery procedures, root canal treatment, dental implants and orthodontic care.
Are Digital X-Rays Safe?
Digital X-rays are very safe. Firstly, they produce significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays – in fact, you are exposed to less radiation from digital X-rays than you are by the sun in your day-to-day life. Digital radiography also captures images with small digital sensors, avoiding the need for chemicals to develop the images. Additionally, X-ray machines are inspected regularly to ensure they are functioning properly.
