The Importance of Surgical Instructions
Many people worry about what might happen during their surgical procedures, especially when those procedures involve their mouths and their ability to speak and eat. After all, your mouth plays an incredibly important role in your day-to-day life and the overall quality of life. However, as our dentist and team can tell you, what you do before and after your surgery is just as important as what happens during your procedure when it comes to ensuring a safe and successful outcome.
Following your surgical instructions precisely is important for a number of reasons, including:
- Avoiding complications during the procedure
- Preventing discomfort or infection following treatment
- Improving the chances of success for your procedure
Avoiding Complications During Your Procedure
Following your pre-op instructions helps avoid complications during the procedure itself. Our dentist and team will provide you with any instructions you will need to help you prepare for your appointment and for your treatment. Depending on the type of procedure you are receiving, pre-op instructions may include:
- Care instructions to protect your surrounding teeth prior to treatment
- Preparatory antibiotic therapy
- Altering any prescription medication routines you may have
- Avoiding food for a period of time prior to your procedure
Please contact us if you have questions or concerns about pre-op instructions. Our team will be happy speak with and help you prepare for your treatment appropriately.
Preventing Discomfort, Infection or Other Complications Following Treatment
After your procedure, our dentist and team will provide you with post-op instructions. These instructions are designed to help you remain comfortable and heal quickly. While you will receive instructions for the specific procedure you have undergone, some general guidelines to help you remain comfortably and continue healing properly include:
- Using any prescribed medications, antibiotics or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed
- Adjusting other medications as needed, if our dentist and your physician determine it is necessary
- Using ice packs or cold compresses to reduce swelling, relieve discomfort and slow bleeding
- Maintaining a “soft” diet during recovery
- Avoiding chewing on the side of the mouth where the procedure was completed
- Cleaning the treatment site as directed by our dentist, such as with prescribed antimicrobial rinses or oral hygiene products
Improving Your Chances of A Successful Treatment
If you do not follow your pre- and post-op instructions, your procedure is less likely to be successful. In fact, you are more than twice as likely to experience complications in your healing process, which can produce further complications for your oral health and smile. By following all instructions our dentist and team provide, you increase your chances of a successful treatment and a fully restored, healthy smile.
